Found a list of fire safety problems? Here's how to actually fix them (fire stopping remediation)

Finding fire stopping defects is the easy part. The harder, and far more useful, part is turning a long list of issues into clear actions a contractor can actually get on with. Here's how to bridge that gap.

Why a list of problems isn't enough on its own

A list that just says “this is wrong, and so is this” doesn't tell you what to fix first or how to fix it. Without that, urgent issues get treated the same as minor ones, work stalls, and the same problems turn up again next time you check. The goal is to move from “here's what's wrong” to “here's what to do, in what order, and how.”

Sort by risk, not by how many there are

Not every gap or fault matters equally. A problem on an escape route, or in a wall protecting where people sleep, matters far more than a small gap somewhere low-risk. Sorting by risk means you deal with the things that protect people first, and fit the rest in sensibly around your budget.

Urgent: problems on escape routes or major fire barriers; deal with these first.
Important: problems that weaken the building's fire protection but carry less immediate risk.
Routine: minor issues that can be picked up as part of planned work.

Give contractors what they actually need

A good record removes the guesswork on site. For each problem, we capture:

A clear photo and exact location
What it's made of and what's passing through it, so the right fix is used
The proposed fix and the standard it needs to meet
Anything that affects access, like out-of-hours restrictions

With that, a contractor can quote accurately, turn up once, and fix it properly the first time, with no return visits and no surprises.

Finish the job properly
